| Abstract | The purpose of the specific article is to present an optional environmental project entitled ‘The forest, a cause for artistic creation’, which was realized during the school year 2004-2005 by the 6th Elementary School of Edessa. The subject was chosen after taking into consideration certain criteria like the existence of several forests in the area, the contact of students with literary works that refer to the forest quite often and the fact that the forest can become a source of inspiration for creative expression. Given the fact that the forest is a valued place into which many stories and fairy tales happen or to which many poems refer, our attention was focused not so much on its flora and fauna but on its relation with art. The basic aim was to negotiate a theme of environmental education through literature and art, subjects which are usually superseded within the curriculum of elementary education. The subject was approached cross-curricularly and cross-scientifically, a fact which can also be observed in the composition of the pedagogical team, where an elementary school teacher, a P.E. teacher, an English teacher and a Music teacher participated. The skills which were cultivated were related to Language (Greek and English), Music, P.E., Environmental Study, Drama, Art and New Technologies. Equally important was the cultivation and acquisition of social skills through the co-operation of students and teachers in groups or pairs, as well as the development of initiatives. |
