| Abstract | The management of medical wastes is an ongoing problem and constitutes a substantial technical and economical challenge for many countries. A large portion of the hazardous waste stream in hospitals derives from diagnostic film processors. During processing of photographic films, a solution containing silver is generated. Silver should be recovered because it is considered to be an environmental contaminant as well as a valuable commodity. This paper presents an analysis of the most important problems arising from the management of imaging wastes in health units, supervised by the 2nd Health Regional Administration of Central Macedonia (2nd HRA-CM) as well as an estimation of the economic benefit from silver recovery, resulting from recently (2005) collected, relevant data. |
