Abstract Katsifarakis KL, Tselepidou K, Triantafyllou B:
"Combined use of optimization and flow simulation tools for groundwater resources management. ",
In IWRM-WB: 45-52, (Apr 2005)

Keywords
Abstract   Planning of groundwater resources management requires the combined use of optimization and flow simulation tools. The method of genetic algorithms has been used successfully in many complex optimization problems. In many cases the objective function (evaluation function) includes a simulation model of the respective groundwater flow. In these cases, total computational volume depends mainly on the simulation model. In this paper we study the possibility to combine genetic algorithms with a simplified analytical simulation of groundwater flow and a suitable penalty function. We have concluded, based on application examples, that one may achieve substantial reduction of computational volume, without seriously compromising the quality of the results.
