| Abstract | The purpose of this study was to investigate the sustainability situation of agricultural activities based on the environmental indicators in Salihabad district of Hamadan province, Iran. In this area, many factors threaten the sustainability of agriculture. Some of these factors are: degradation of rangelands, increasing use of chemical inputs, soil erosion, lowering soil nutrients and quality, pollution of ground and surface water, and converting the arable land. The statistical population of the study included 27 villages, which 96 households were selected for study; using optimum allocation cluster sampling method. The data collection instrument was a questionnaire which it's validity confirmed by jury of experts and reliability determined by doing pre-test and calculation of Cronbach Alpha coefficient. The questionnaire was completed through interview with farmers in the field. Data analysis was accomplished using various statistical methods, including principle component analysis and cluster analysis. Findings indicate that considering the environmental indications of sustainability the farming systems in the area are at the "critical” stage; as 67.7 percent are "very unsustainable", 22.91 percent are "unsustainable", 7.29 percent are "relatively sustainable" and only 2.08 percent of farming systems were "sustainable", based on the environmental sustainability indicators which developed in this study. The findings of the research can contribute to policy formation for sustainable agricultural development programs in the area. |
