Abstract Nastos PT:
"Spatial and temporal distribution of tropical days in Greece",
In 7PGC/HGS: 1-8, (Oct 2004)

Keywords   tropical day, spatial and temporal distribution, Greece
Abstract   Tropical day is the day in which the maximum temperature is greater than 30 ?C. It is crystal clear that, the study of tropical days includes also the absolute maximum temperatures, which are of great interest for the description of a region climate. These days are considered as very hot, and they particularly are of great importance for bioclimatology, especially for the individuals who are sensitive in the heat - stress. The regime of the tropical days in Greece is the objective of this study, in order to demonstrate their changes from decade to decade, for the time period 1960-2000. For this purpose, the annual number of tropical days in each one of the 26 meteorological stations of National Meteorological Service, uniformly distributed in the Hellenic region, was calculated. In the process, the trends of the tropical days for each one station were investigated by the application of Mann Kendall technique, while the spatial distribution per decade, using the Kriging method, reveals the regions which present change (increase or decrease) in the number of tropical days during the examined period. Two characteristic periods of change for the annual number of tropical days are obvious to the total of meteorological stations in Greece. The first period (1955-1976) is determined by a decrease trend, which is statistically significant (c.l. 95%), for adequate stations, while during 1976-2000 the tropical days increase and the maximum they appear, exceeds the corresponding maximum appeared in the beginning of decade of 1950, for several of the examined meteorological stations, as well.
