"Evaluation of the long-term implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) in peach cultivation in greece",

Abstract   The uncontrolled uses of pesticides from the early years of previous century have created a large number of problems to human and environment. During the last decades public concern over pesticide residues in fresh fruits and vegetables has led to the development of alternative methods of cultivation in order to minimize the negative effects of conventional cultivation to environment and consumer’s health. Among these methods is the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) which scope is to minimize the use of active substances and improve the use of necessary chemicals in order to keep pesticide residues inside Maximum Residue Limits (MRL) or eliminate them completely. The regions of Imathia and Pella in the prefecture of Macedonia in Northern Greece are the biggest producers of peaches in Greece and a large percentage of them are yellow cling peaches oriented to canning industry. In the recent years local cooperatives of peach producers introduce IPM in peach cultivation and monitor regularly pesticide residues in the final product. In this work we describe the results of residue monitoring for the period from May 2000 to September 2003. The samples were obtained from local coops and were produced under conventional and integrated management. The analytical method is based in the use of solid-phase extraction technique with nonporous carbon based packing followed by gas chromatography with mass spectrometer detection (GC-MS) in selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode [1,2,3,5].
