"Determination of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in environmental samples by means of solid phase extraction coupled to GC-ECD ",
In ECPROME: 213-218, (Oct 2004)

Keywords
Abstract   A method for the trace determination of four pesticides, fenarimol, fenvalerate, pendimethalin and vinclozolin in natural waters and freshwater sediments has been developed and validated. The selected compounds that are suspected for endocrine disrupting activity belong to different chemical groups and are used mainly in agriculture. The environmental analysis of the target analytes requires the use of very sensitive and selective methods, which in the present study employ an off-line solid phase extraction (SPE) step for the extraction of the analytes from natural waters and sonication with consequent SPE extraction step for purification of the sediment extracts. Styrene divinylbenzene (SDB) extraction disks, were used exhibiting excellent retention of selected compounds. Pesticide determination was carried out by gas chromatography coupled to electron-capture (ECD) detection. All procedures were shown to be linear over a wide range of concentration. High recoveries were obtained with both proposed methods ranged from 75-97% for waters and 71-78% for sediment samples and reached limits of detection in the low ng/L and μg/Kg ranges respectively. To evaluate their efficiency both methods were applied to real water and sediment samples. Analysis revealed the presence of fenarimol, pendimethalin and vinclozolin residues, demonstrating that it is appropriate to include their determination in routine analysis.
